When the alarm sounds, you can tap its top to silence (or snooze) it and there’s also the option to just say “Stop!” without first giving the “OK Google” wake command. Lenovo has at least thought of making the speaker easier to silence than some of its predecessors. It’s not the biggest inconvenience, but I’d love to have the option to choose a radio station instead of an alarm tone within the Smart Clock’s alarm menu. Instead, you’ll have to make do with setting up a routine from the Home app that wakes you in the same way at the same time on the same days every week, or you’ll have to make do with the “Good morning routine” starting only after you’ve silenced the alarm set from the Smart Clock. To elaborate, there’s no option to be woken by your favourite radio station or Spotify playlist ad hoc. However, while there’s huge scope for customisation, it still frustrates me that it won’t enable you to use the Smart Clock (or indeed any other Google Assistant smart speaker) in quite the same way as a traditional alarm clock radio. Routines are one of the most powerful tools in Google Home’s arsenal and they can be used to do just about anything – from adjusting your lights and thermostats to telling you about your upcoming calendar entries and playing your favourite podcast or radio station. There are also options to enable the sunrise alarm feature – which wakes you gradually over half an hour by increasing the display’s brightness – and to activate your “Good morning routine”. From here, you can toggle existing alarms on and off and set new ones, and decide whether you want them to repeat. Swiping right through the interface reveals an additional card compared to what you’ll find on its larger siblings, too: an alarm menu. ![]() A long press on this screen gives you the option to choose from a range of different stylish clock faces, which you can customise to show the weather, reminders, alarm suggestions and more. With no Ambient Mode that you find on other Google Assistant-powered smart displays, the Smart Clock defaults to a large clock on its homescreen. This is a very nice touch.īuy now from the BT Store Lenovo Smart Clock review: Clock and alarm features By swiping up from the bottom of the screen and opening Display Settings, you can also set the Smart Clock to use a monochrome clock and a “darker” minimum brightness at night so it never wakes you. The Smart Clock makes it easy to read what’s on the screen, regardless of the light conditions, because it has an ambient light sensor that adjusts the brightness according to your surroundings. For reading the time and viewing calendar entries, it’s more than adequate and the screen appears bright with vibrant colours. ![]() That’s not especially high-resolution for a screen of its size, but it’s not really a problem when the Smart Clock isn’t intended for looking at photos or video. To stop it from sliding around on your bedside table, the Smart Clock has two grippy rubber strips on its underside – one at the front and one at the rear.Īs for the smart speaker’s 4in screen, it’s an 800 x 480 panel. Two buttons on its top let you control the speaker’s volume, while the Smart Clock’s rectangular rear houses a USB-A port alongside a power input and the mute switch for the microphone. Unlike Google’s Nest Hub, which resembles a tablet stuck to a pumice stone, the Lenovo speaker is a single, cohesive unit covered entirely in fabric – and it looks all the better for it. Lenovo Smart Clock review: Design and displayĭominated by its 4in screen when viewed from the front, Lenovo’s Smart Clock is a small, cute and boxy thing. If you’re more interested in having a traditional alarm clock radio than smart features, you might be better off with something such as the Pure Siesta Rise. It’s not primarily intended as an alarm clock but comes with a front-facing camera for making video calls and a 3.5mm audio port. With its 5.5in display, though, Amazon’s recently announced Echo Show 5 arguably represents the Smart Clock’s greatest competition in terms of value for money. Nutrient preservation Ĭold-pressing does not preserve the contents of phytochemicals or micronutrients compared to conventional centrifugal juicing or blending. Though the size of the cold-pressed juice industry is not independently tracked, the 2013 estimates ranged from US$1.6 billion to US$3.4 billion. ![]() Starting with Liquiteria in 1996, cold-pressed juice bars first emerged in New York City and have since spread internationally. Without pasteurization, as for typical home-made juices stored in a refrigerator, significant degradation of phytochemicals and micronutrients occurs within 6 days. Pasteurization or HPP allows the juice to be stored for about 30 days. Īfter extracting juice from fruits and vegetables, the juice may be consumed raw, or the manufacturer may choose to put the juice through a preservation method such as HPP or pasteurization to extend shelf life and kill potentially harmful microorganisms. Vertical press layers with open-top cloth bags allow for faster loading and emptying of the press, compared to the classic rack-and-cloth method which involved wrapping layers of ground fruit in cloth. The industry standard hydraulic cold-press technology with vertical pressing layers was invented by Dale E. The pomace left behind is generally composted, recycled in food products or discarded. The pressure causes the juice and water content from the produce to drip into a collection tray below, leaving behind the fibre content in the filter bag. The second process is the hydraulic press this exposes the shredded produce to extreme pressures between two plates. Produce is loaded into a large hopper feeding tube and typically falls into a filter bag. In industrial production, the shredding process uses a steel rotating disc. The first stage is to shred or compress the fruits or vegetables into a pulp. Making cold-pressed juice is a two-step process. History Īlthough cold-pressed juices were produced over several decades, the products gained more common use during the fad of juice "cleansing", expanding into a wider industry in the early 21st century. ![]() For example, in the United States, it has been reported that a 12- fluid ounce (355mL) bottle could cost as much as US$12. In general, these juices are more expensive than other types of juices, as they are made from 100% fruit and vegetables without any added ingredients. This type of juice has been commercially produced for decades, but became more common in some countries since 2013. Some juicers use technology that helps delay oxidation which can allow for slightly longer storage in refrigerators. Without pasteurization or high-pressure processing (HPP), cold-pressed juices can be stored in a refrigerator for up to three days when phytochemical and micronutrient degradation occurs. ![]() Cold-pressed juice is juice that uses a hydraulic press to extract juice from fruit and vegetables, as opposed to other methods such as centrifugal or single auger. However, even with fewer horsepower, an outboard-powered boat would typically cost 2 to 4% more than a sterndrive-powered boat. As you travel up and down the horsepower spectrum, this rule of thumb stays true. In this case, a 200-horsepower outboard will generally match the performance of a 250-horsepower sterndrive simply because the outboard is lighter and is better positioned behind the boat rather than within it. Making a pricing comparison based on horsepower-a 250-horsepower outboard against a 250-horsepower sterndrive in the same boat-seems obvious, but it’s preferable to do it based on performance. These can be equipped with three or four outboard engines that, when combined, produce more power than the most powerful pair of sterndrive engines available, resulting in performance that was formerly unheard of. ![]() Outboard motors are gaining favor on bigger cabin cruisers and day boats that were previously only fitted with inboard engines as outboard motors have gotten more powerful. Outboards range in power from 2-horsepower kickers to 600-horsepower monsters, but the normal range for family boating is 90-300 horsepower. A specialized marine engine that is mounted directly to the stern of a boat is known as an outboard motor. Sterndrives range in power from 200 to 430 horsepower, however many pre-owned tiny runabouts may be equipped with a 130-horsepower sterndrive that is no longer in production. A specialist watersports tow boat, with an inboard engine operating a propeller beneath the boat and steering control given by a rudder, would be an exception. Inboard family boats nearly generally have a sterndrive (also known as an inboard/outboard or I/O) powertrain, which combines an automotive-style engine located inside the boat with a steerable and trimmable drive unit mounted on the stern (rear). What are the Key Differences Between Inboard and Outboard Motors? It’s not uncommon to see three or four motors decorating the transoms of today’s bigger center consoles. To some extent, enthusiasts get around this by installing a second motor. You may securely tilt the prop out of the water at any moment while boating in shallow seas.īesides the above mentioned advantages, outboards lack the entire torque needed to operate bigger boats, despite their higher power to weight ratio. ![]() ![]() Outboard motors are preferred by fishermen, speedboat owners, and party captains because of their rapid handling, tight turn ratio, and low-speed maneuverability.
![]() The footpath enters a forest about 1.5 miles from the trailhead. This open section of the trail offers quintessential Glacier National Park scenery. During May and June, the large, showy yellow flowers of arrowleaf balsamroot provide an excellent early season contrast to the slopes on which they grow. The slope of the path decreases to about 6% as it passes along the southwest slopes of Mount Henkel (8,770 feet). But don’t let that dampen your enthusiasm. Notice the lighter-colored stone immediately above and below the dark gray sill. The 1,000 to 2,000 degree Fahrenheit magma changed the resident limestone into marble. This band of igneous rock is approximately 100 feet thick and formed when magma was forced between the layers of sedimentary rock in the Siyeh Formation. The dark band toward the top of Mount Wilbur and the Ptarmigan Wall is a diorite sill. Mount Wilbur and Iceberg Peak Tower More than 3,000 Feet Above Iceberg Lake That gray rock is rich with fossilized algae, which formed a reef hundreds of millions of years ago in the Belt Sea. This band extends through the Ptarmigan Wall above Iceberg Lake. If you look carefully at the east face of Mount Wilbur, about halfway between the base of the cliffs and the summit, there is a light gray band about 60 feet high. Just above the Grinnell Formation is the younger buff-colored limestone of the Siyeh Formation which caps both Mount Wilbur and Mount Henkel. Red argillite of the Grinnell Formation makes up the base of Mount Wilbur. The beige and tan colors result from the remains of coral forming organisms. That deposited into deeper water with minimal oxygen ended up being green. Sediment deposited in shallow water reacted with oxygen resulting in reddish colors. Then, seawater lapped a shoreline 50 miles west of Glacier National Park. The ice sculptor also exposed colorful layers of rock deposited over a billion years ago in the ancient Belt Sea. The glacial horn Mount Wilbur (9,231 feet) rises to the southwest. When ice scoured rock on three sides, a horn remained. Straight ahead to the northwest are the pinnacles of the glacial arete named the Ptarmigan Wall. 3 Aretes, knife-edged ridges, resulted when ice rivers worked on two opposing sides of a mountain. ![]() 1ĭuring the Great Ice Age, that began around two-million years ago and ended around 12,000- years ago, enormous glaciers filled the valleys and ground away at the mountains like a gigantic rasp. And, this only goes back one-third of the way to Earth’s beginning. Trying to comprehend the time that has passed from the early stages of sediment eroding from a lifeless Earth surface to what we see today stretches the imagination. The stories behind the chiseled, multilayered mountains make the trip even more spectacular. It’s wise to check this information before heading out. The park maintains a webpage with closures and postings for trails and backcountry campgrounds. Keep your bear spray where you can access it quickly, and know how to use it. Be wise and let them know where you are by making noise. Both black and grizzly bears come to take advantage of this food source, and you will pass through their cafeteria. During July and August, berries are ripening. I should also note that the Ptarmigan Trail and the Iceberg Lake Trail go through prime grizzly bear habitat. One should dig a small cat hole to bury paper or solid waste. Using an average adult pace distance of 2.5 feet, then 80 paces should put one at about the correct distance from the path or surface water. If that doesn’t work out, the potty zone is at least 200 feet from the trail and any water. There is a pit toilet about 2.6 miles from the trailhead just before the footpath crosses Ptarmigan Creek. If not, a polite request should do the trick. Use your favorite friendly greeting so that the people ahead know that you’re there. Know that it’s considered rude to crowd folks in front of you. It’s a lot easier for me to move to the side than it is for the entire group to do the same. That being said, if I’m alone going uphill and encounter a group coming down, it makes sense that I yield to the group. Generally, hikers going uphill have the right of way.
